· Robins are such lovely birds to paint, they are not just cute to look at, but they also give us many challenges along the way. For example, how do we create the whiteness of the chest, but still maintain the deep, darker background colours behind those feathers?
Plus, we need to consider the layering of the feathers as well, how does one section overlap another? This is worked out by carefully looking at the contrasting colours, and how these colours are applied in various layers.
Don't worry, I will show you how I do this during the painting process.
The eye is the ‘life’ of the bird, so we need to spend some careful painting time working on this area. We do this using carefully place wet in wet colour washes, adding tiny details to build up the iris, pop in the pupil, and then add that highlight of life!
So have a go at this delightful Robin and let's get those brushes wet!
