Introduction to Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
This course provides an introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis, a powerful tool for synthesizing evidence from clinical trials. Participants will learn how to formulate an answerable research question, define inclusion and exclusion criteria, search for the evidence, extract data, assess the risk of bias in clinical trials, and perform a meta-analysis. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to confidently conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses. ▼

This course provides an introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials. Participants will learn how to formulate an answerable research question, define inclusion and exclusion criteria, search for the evidence, extract data, assess the risk of bias in clinical trials, and perform a meta-analysis. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to describe the steps in conducting a systematic review, develop an answerable question using the “Participants Interventions Comparisons Outcomes” (PICO) framework, describe the process used to collect and extract data from reports of clinical trials, describe methods to critically assess the risk of bias of clinical trials, and describe and interpret the results of meta-analyses.
[Applications]
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses of clinical trials. They will be able to use the PICO framework to formulate answerable research questions, search for evidence, extract data, assess the risk of bias in clinical trials, and perform a meta-analysis. Participants will also be able to interpret the results of meta-analyses and use them to inform clinical decision-making.
[Career Paths]
One job position path that learners may pursue after completing this course is a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Specialist. This position involves conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses of clinical trials to answer research questions. The specialist would be responsible for formulating an answerable research question, defining inclusion and exclusion criteria, searching for evidence, extracting data, assessing the risk of bias in clinical trials, and performing a meta-analysis.
The development trend for this position is increasing demand. As the healthcare industry continues to grow, there is an increasing need for professionals who can conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses to answer research questions. Additionally, the development of new technologies and data analysis tools has made it easier to conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which has further increased the demand for professionals in this field.
[Education Paths]
The recommended educational path for learners interested in Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis is to pursue a Master's degree in Clinical Research or a related field. This degree program typically includes courses in research design, biostatistics, epidemiology, and clinical trials. Students will learn how to design and conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses, as well as how to interpret and present the results. They will also gain an understanding of the ethical considerations involved in conducting clinical research.
The development trend for this field is towards more rigorous and comprehensive systematic reviews and meta-analyses. As the evidence base for clinical decision-making continues to grow, the need for well-designed and well-executed systematic reviews and meta-analyses is becoming increasingly important. As such, there is an increasing demand for professionals with the skills and knowledge to conduct these types of studies.
