This course provides an in-depth exploration of the War for the Greater Middle East, which began over thirty years ago when the United States set out to "fix" the region. Students will learn about the costly exertions of U.S. troops, covert operatives and proxies in predominantly Muslim societies, and the terrible toll these efforts have exacted. The course will also examine the factors that led to the conflict, the errors of judgment and implementation made along the way, and alternative approaches to policy that could have better served the interests of the United States and the people living in the affected countries. Through this exploration, students will gain a better understanding of the failed War for the Greater Middle East and its irreversible consequences.
