Do you want to develop the skills and knowledge needed to help preserve tropical coastal ecosystems? These habitats provide goods and services for hundreds of millions of people but human activities have led to their global decline. TROPIC101x will introduce you to the incredible plants and animals that create these unique ecosystems. You will go on to explore the challenges these ecosystems are facing such as overfishing, coastal pollution, ocean warming and acidification, then learn about some techniques being used to tackle these problems. Lectures will be delivered by leading experts. Many of them were filmed on-site in the Great Barrier Reef, at The University of Queensland's research station on Heron Island. The course concludes with an innovative virtual ecology project, where you will have the option to take part in a citizen science project. Join us on an exciting journey, as you develop new knowledge and skills, during this beautiful and engaging course!

[Applications]
Upon completion of TROPIC101x, participants will have the skills and knowledge to help preserve tropical coastal ecosystems. They will be able to identify the unique plants and animals that create these habitats, as well as understand the challenges they are facing. Participants will also be familiar with techniques being used to tackle these problems, and have the option to take part in a citizen science project. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to tropical coastal ecosystems, and equips participants with the skills and knowledge to help protect them.
[Career Paths]
1. Marine Biologist: Marine biologists study the behavior, physiology, and ecology of marine organisms. They work in a variety of settings, including universities, research laboratories, aquariums, and conservation organizations. Marine biologists are increasingly in demand as the effects of climate change and human activities on the ocean become more apparent.
2. Coastal Ecologist: Coastal ecologists study the interactions between land and sea, and the effects of human activities on coastal ecosystems. They work in a variety of settings, including universities, research laboratories, and conservation organizations. Coastal ecologists are in high demand as the effects of climate change and human activities on the ocean become more apparent.
3. Marine Conservationist: Marine conservationists work to protect and restore marine ecosystems. They work in a variety of settings, including universities, research laboratories, and conservation organizations. Marine conservationists are increasingly in demand as the effects of climate change and human activities on the ocean become more apparent.
4. Marine Policy Analyst: Marine policy analysts work to develop and implement policies that protect and restore marine ecosystems. They work in a variety of settings, including universities, research laboratories, and conservation organizations. Marine policy analysts are in high demand as the effects of climate change and human activities on the ocean become more apparent.
[Education Paths]
1. Marine Biology: Marine biology is a field of study that focuses on the biology of marine organisms, their behavior, and their interactions with the environment. It is a rapidly growing field, with new discoveries being made every day. Marine biologists study a wide range of topics, from the behavior of individual species to the dynamics of entire ecosystems. As the effects of climate change become more pronounced, marine biologists are increasingly being called upon to help protect and restore marine ecosystems.
2. Coastal Management: Coastal management is a field of study that focuses on the management of coastal areas. It involves the development of strategies to protect and restore coastal ecosystems, as well as the development of policies to ensure the sustainable use of coastal resources. Coastal management is becoming increasingly important as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.
3. Oceanography: Oceanography is the study of the ocean and its processes. It is a multidisciplinary field that combines the study of physical, chemical, and biological processes in the ocean. Oceanographers study the ocean's physical characteristics, its circulation patterns, and its chemical and biological components. They also study the effects of human activities on the ocean, such as pollution and climate change.
4. Environmental Science: Environmental science is a field of study that focuses on the interactions between humans and the environment. It involves the study of the physical, chemical, and biological processes that occur in the environment, as well as the development of strategies to protect and restore ecosystems. Environmental science is becoming increasingly important as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.
